NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS OF CHOCOLATE

What are the Nutritional Benefits of Chocolate

As some of you know I am a registered dietitian/nutritionist. Being a chocolatier is my retirement. I became a dietitian because I was passionate about having a healthy lifestyle and eating wholesome foods. I still keep up with nutrition and wellness research.

I thought I would take the time to share with you why chocolate is nutritious. Also in these trying times it is important to eat right to keep our immune systems fired up to fight the COVID-19 virus. What foods should you be eating to help you build a healthy immune system?

Adding certain foods to the diet may strengthen your immune system. Your immune system can protect you from germs, viruses and illness like COVID-19.  So what better time than now to make some lifestyle and diet changes to keep your immune system healthy.

The foods that are immune boosters are rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Zinc. Some of the immune boosting foods include: Blueberries, cherries, cranberries, turmeric, oily fish like salmon, yogurt with live cultures, green and black tea, citrus foods(oranges, grapefruits, lemons), spinach, red bell peppers, sweet potatoes, broccoli, apricots, ginger, garlic, almonds and CHOCOLATE.

You may have noticed in the shop that we have some signs to point you to the chocolates high in antioxidants.  The immune boosting chocolates we have are chocolate covered blueberries, cranberries and cherries, chocolate dipped ginger, chocolate- dipped apricots, chocolate almonds, almond clusters, dark chocolate bars and chocolate chai tea.

Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, has the antioxidant theobromine which helps to boost the immune system by protecting the bodies’ cells from free radicals.

When you go to the grocery store consider picking up some of these nutritious immune boosting foods. Stop by the Painted Turtle Chocolatier shop for some chocolates rich in antioxidants.

You really are what you eat so add some antioxidant rich foods to your diet. Stay healthy during these stressful times.
